FAQs

Here you will find a list of Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

  • What is Emervel®?
Emervel is a complete range of scientifically-advanced dermal hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers which replace the skin’s naturally decreasing HA, restoring facial volume. The range provides practitioners with the optimal choice when treating facial lines and loss of volume to meet the needs of the patient.
  • Who is behind Emervel?
Emervel is marketed by the world-leading dermatology company, Galderma. Galderma is dedicated to research and development in dermatology with a world-recognised portfolio of prescription and OTC skin care and aesthetic products. The introduction of Emervel follows the successful release of Azzalure® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) into the aesthetic market. Azzalure® is indicated for the treatment of glabellar lines.
  • What does Emervel contain?
The main component of Emervel is hyaluronic acid (HA), or hyaluronan. This is a naturally occurring substance found in all living organisms, though the HA in Emervel is produced by a biotechnological process from bacterial fermentation without using any animal products. HA is mixed with a cross-linker Butanediol Diglycidyl Ether (BDDE) in an aqueous medium to form a gel, which is then purified through dialysis to eliminate non cross-linked BDDE.
  • How is Emervel stored?
Emervel can be stored at room temperature (25ºC) for two years from date of manufacture. Refer to the expiry date on the individual packet for the correct use by date.
  • How long does Emervel last for?
The effects of the Optimal Balance TechnologyTM used in Emervel provide visible, natural looking facial restoration for 6-9 months. In clinical trials, some effects have also been seen at month 12.
  • How long should you wait between Emervel treatments?
Based on clinical trial results the interval between Emervel treatment sessions can be 6-9 months, or even longer if preferred.
  • What regulations does Emervel comply with?
Emervel is classified as a medical device and is tested to the standards of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO 13485). Emervel also satisfies all requirements for the CE mark.
  • What clinical evidence supports the efficacy and tolerability of Emervel?
Emervel has been extensively investigated beyond the CE requirements. Randomised, comparative clinical trials demonstrate that Emervel Classic and Deep are very well tolerated and show similar or significantly better efficacy than the commonly-used hyaluronic acid fillers in the market.....
  • What is the Emervel Optimal Balance TechnologyTM?
Optimal Balance TechnologyTM is a manufacturing engineering innovation involving careful cross-linking and gel calibration to produce a perfected range of fillers. All contain the same concentration of hyaluronic acid - 20 mg/ml. See Optimal Balance TechnologyTM.
  • At what tissue depth should Emervel be injected?
For optimal results each Emervel filler should be injected into the correct skin layer according to its indication. See Indication skin layer depth
  • Which is the most effective injection technique?
The choice of technique is largely down to practitioner preference, however the method should be appropriate to the particular indication, treatment area and EMERVEL® filler used. See Technique
  • What happens if Emervel is injected incorrectly?
EMERVEL® has demonstrated an excellent tolerability profile in clinical trials, however, practitioners should follow the directions for each filler indication to achieve optimal results. A corrected site may be massaged until the implant looks more natural, taking care not to over massage the area.
  • What is the difference between Emervel and competitor filler products?
EMERVEL® benefits from the Optimal Balance TechnologyTM that provides two main competitive advantages:
    • A manufacturing innovation ensures immediate and persistent aesthetic correction, with excellent tolerability, as demonstrated in trials
    • Tailor made products with different properties to specifically address the different types of indication to best meet patient needs
  • Can the range of Emervel fillers be combined, or used with other fillers?
Each filler in the EMERVEL® is calibrated to match a particular treatment indication. Assuming treatment is required for different areas of the face there is no reason why two or more fillers cannot be used. However, EMERVEL® should not be injected into an area that has already received an injectable implant.
  • What needle size do I use?
EMERVEL® fillers are supplied in a pre-filled syringe packaged in a blister pack with two needles, at the appropriate size to deliver optimal results and patient comfort. EMERVEL® Classic, Touch and Lips use a 30G 1/2 needle, with 27G ½ and 23G 1 needles for EMERVEL® Deep and Volume, respectively.
  • How easy is it to inject Emervel?
EMERVEL® syringes are ergonomically designed to provide the practitioner with a smooth and even injection experience. Each filler comes complete with a syringe adapted to the viscosity of the particular type of filler.
  • What are the most common side effects?
Side effects are similar to those seen with other fillers and normally resolve after a few days without treatment. Possible side effects include: swelling, oedema (puffiness), skin redness and itching, pain in the injected areas, skin colouration or discolouration, sensitivity at the injection site and hardness or a nodule at the injection site.
  • What are the contraindications?
EMERVEL® fillers are contraindicated in patients presenting with severe allergies, particularly those with a known hyaluronic acid allergy, as well as autoimmune disorder, porphyria and hypersensitivity to lidocaine or amide anaesthetics (in lidocaine formulations). It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding patients. Fillers should also be avoided in areas of skin with acute or chronic lesions, or where fillers have already been injected.
